Selective Laser Melting of Polymer Based Multi-Phase Systems

The characteristics of components produced by selective laser beam melting of polymers are mainly determined by the used material. The currently limited range of materials limits the fields of application of this technology. This fact steadily increases the industrial interest in exploring new polymer material systems to extend the usable material range. In addition to the production of polymer powders in subproject A1 and A2, this subproject is concerned with the production and processing of multi-phase polymeric systems. Expanding the range of usable laser melting materials with tailored property profiles e.g. by blend systems or filled polymers, represents a substantial contribution to the further technological innovation development of the process potential of laser beam melting processes.

The aim of this subproject is the systematic study of the fundamental interactions between a multi-phase material system, the manufacturing process and the resulting component properties to generate components with graded properties and selectively adjustable property profiles. First, the process side and mechanical recycling requirements for possible multi-phase material systems are analyzed. The aim is to select combinations of materials that are suitable for powder- and laser-based additive manufacturing processes. In order to achieve the required graded component properties, varying mixing partners were used as well as various preparation techniques or mixing strategies. The fundamental and comprehensive knowledge to influence the self-adjusting phase morphology can be used to derive strategies for creating spatially resolved graded components.
